This page has information about the tests carried out to establish the ability of the mark to last the life of the instrument.

There is also a report of corrosion tests carried out by B Braun and a letter confirming that there was no damage to the instruments.

The NICE IPG196 is an important document because it identifies that instruments migrate between sets. It also requires that on neuro surgical and posterior ophthalmic procedures instruments must not be mixed.

The only way to ensure segregation is to uniquely identify individual surgical instruments.

Coding for Success has identified the need for identifying the need for coding in the health service. It also highlights the problems associated with the identification of small instruments. Although promoting the Data Matrix code it does recognise that for some surgical instruments this will not be appropriate and another coding method may be required.

If you would like to receive a list of hospitals where the Matrix Marking system has been installed then please contact us. All the managers identified have agreed to talk to interested parties about how the system is working and if it is meeting their expectations.

Here are brief notes on three case studies. It is planned that there will be fuller reports on these studies in the near future and these will be available on the Matrix Marking web site.

Click on the web page button to open the Matrix Marking web site using your regular browser. You then be able to find more information relating to the different marking methods and the potential difficulties with some of them.
