Here you can see the anvil on which the instruments are held. The gap between the stylus and the anvil can be raised or lowered depending on the size of instruments being marked.

The stylus returns to the upper position after marking and so you do not want too large a gap or the time between marking will be increased.

An important lesson to be learned is how to hold the instrument during marking.
